What to prepare

Studying for the exam without knowing “what to study” is the most common mistake we make. Before starting coaching, it is wise to have a look at the syllabus and previous year question papers to develop a strategy for the future. Scanning the last 5-10 year papers of UPSC Civil Services Exam can convey a lot of useful data to you that the other students may be unaware of. You can see the mark-list and the ratio of easy to difficult questions. It can also help you to make a choice of the optional subject.

Choosing Optional Subject

Students are often confused about the optional subject. It’s true that everyone wants to select an easy subject with which he can score maximum with less time and effort. Hence, often students go with the strategy of selecting a subject under the category of General Studies. No doubt it is a good strategy and can save a lot of time. But this is not universally applicable. Take the case of Rachat Raj, UPSC 2013 Rank 3, who scored exceptionally well with Zoology optional. There are also many who made it to the top with optional subjects like Medical Science or Law. Thus the choice is totally an individual’s perception. Following key points can help you select:

  1. Time availability
  2. Efforts required
  3. The possibility of maximum marks
  4. Your desires
  5. Your strengths and weaknesses (Do consult your mentors and teachers)

How to prepare

1.      Make a plan

Make a journal in which you maintain your short-term goals and long-term goals. If possible make a timetable or a mind map. It helps minimize distractions and maximise focus.

2.      Small breaks

Do not study at one long stretch. Take small breaks in between.

Fill your Sunday (or some other day in every week) with the things you love to do. This will help rejuvenate you besides reducing your stress and anxiety. Now you are good to go for the hard upcoming week.

  1. Self-evaluation and re-focussing

Realising your strengths, weaknesses and productivity level is very important to ensure good performance. Spend first 15 minutes of the day re-focussing on your one goal, saying to yourself: “I have to crack the IAS no matter what. And to accomplish it, I will study so-and-so topic of so-and-so subject for so-and-so hours today”. Making such precise commitments will strengthen your willpower and you will start getting results accordingly.

  1. Good coaching along with good study material

IAS exam requires good teachers and mentors. Good teachers not only teach you but also guide you besides motivating you to stay focussed. Apart from qualified and efficient teachers, there must be good study material and guide books for the students to refer to. Here at AAABrightAcademy, we provide capable and compassionate teachers along with best possible study material.

  1. Go with a relaxed mind to the exam

Make sure you study with the same zeal and enthusiasm everyday to avoid any last minute rush. Do not panic at exam time. BELIEVE in yourself and your preparation. Keep on saying “I CAN AND I WILL”. Avoid any kind of stress before exam. Stay away from stressful people. Stop your preparation 24 hours before exam. And start building your strategy of attempting the exam. You are all set to go. GOOD LUCK !
